@jorijn@toot.community hi! I've been using Kagi as my primary/only search engine for about a year and a half or so now? It's honestly been great. Search result quality has been very consistent for me, and much improved over when I was primarily using DuckDuckGo before it. I had to switch to Google quite often back then, to be honest. They're not the cheapest and in this modern day and age it might feel unusual to pay for search, but I like the clarity in the relationship we have, not to mention the clarity in the business model. If you can afford it, I can highly recommend it! (I'm not affiliated in any way other than being a paying customer.)

@jorijn@toot.community Kagi is somewhat well known and Orion is simple only supported on MacOS (Linux in alpha) so think the browser is just a little too new for it to be "out" there.

@jorijn@toot.community Kagi is mostly using Yandex as a backend, so may be questionable from ethical standpoint

@jorijn@toot.community I might have heard the name before, but I've never tried it or ignored it because of already mentioned reasons. I'm using @librewolf@chaos.social (privacy friendly by default Firefox fork) with qwant.com as search engine. I've tried a few, but others were very slow or had mostly bad results.

@jorijn@toot.community They certainly aren't that well known but I've stumbled across them a couple of times when looking at threads of search engine alternatives. I've been quite happy using Kagi and I do quite enjoy being able to prioritize (and even more importantly deprioritize or ban) websites in search results.

@jorijn@toot.community its paid? Ladybird and Servo are the new open alternative browser engines. @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net and the @ecosia@mastodon.social chromium browsers are okay
