Three of the Lapwing chicks came near the roadside fence today. Here is one I was able to photo without disturbing it.
This is about a week old, is one of 3. The recently hatched group of 4 is also visible. The older group of 4, I couldn't locate today. They've either moved into a corner of the field or out through the gate into another field. If I could see a chick or two, would mean losses, hopefully they've all moved.
There's also two new Lapwing nests, so another 8 eggs, I hope. #Birds

That would be potentially 19 chicks from 6 nests (1 failed) in this one field. I don't know enough about wader breeding numbers to say if this is a great result. I did a wader survey of a farm a few miles down Teesdale last week and there were 28 Lapwing in 26 fields and only 3 chicks visible. It may be they hatched earlier but I expected a lot more. I will have a look into adjacent fields if I can, without disturbance, to see if any more are there.
