The hummingbird feeder was empty! I left it that way overnight because it was too dark to clean and refill it last night. First thing this morning, a hummingbird came by and noticed the deficiency. It hovered down to eye level with Hilo (a cat) who was crouched on the other side of the screen of the porch, waiting for a chipmunk or squirrel to come by. They stared at each other for quite a while. I understand why the bird thought the cat was in charge of things around here 😹

RE: https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica/116918532877834251 I mean, pot's legal now in many places, and has a lot fewer downsides.

From last September at Acadia National Park. They had been running rescue training exercises, so installed hardware had been flagged for the trainees. Apparently there are places in the park where visitors need rescuing frequently enough that they install things ropes can be hooked into. Generally speaking, if you see something this, do not go any closer to the edge! Tagging @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org because it seems like something he'd be interested in 🤣

I got a hankering for three bean salad, so I looked up a bunch of recipes and then didn't follow any of them. (How much sugar?! Are you kidding me?) Also, I only have one kind of bean, so it's just a 1 bean salad. Needs to marinate for at least 12 hours, so I'll see how it is tomorrow. Smells good! White navy beans (cooked only enough to leave a bit of crunch), small thin sliced onion, thin sliced celery, sweet red pepper, cider vinegar, extra virgin olive oil, oregano, b...

We've had so many turkeys around, including males in full display hanging out with a lot of hens who are mostly just eating. Unfortunately, you can't get good photos shooting through a screen 😂 #CrapNaturePhotography

RE: https://mastodon.archive.org/@internetarchive/116519024119870924 One of the features I loved about Ask Jeeves was the ability to see trends in what was being searched. Not the "top searches", but the searches that were growing the fastest. Fascinating insights into random nooks of the long tail.

The kitties are very excited: it was finally warm enough to open the window to the porch. They've been going in and out and in and out all day!

RE: https://universeodon.com/@lovableweirdo/116477028334099123 I have a new hero! I've spent quite a bit of time over the years thinking about the design of a self-cleaning bathroom. Close the door, hit the button, and come back later - kinda like a dishwasher.

@futurebird I feel obligated to tell you that yesterday I watched an ant carrying a not-quite-dead tick - my hero! I did not get a picture. By the time I got back to do so she had moved on. I'll try to do better next time!

We don't have manmade standing stones around here, but we do have lots of glacial erratics - huge hunks of stone carried by glaciers and left scattered about when they melted. They're almost always a completely different kind of rock than what's under them. I love them. #StandingStoneSunday #WildStones #mosstodon #LichenSubscribe
