My favourite bird is the hooded crow (corvus cornix) that is very common where I live. Some weeks ago one pair started nesting in a tree across the street. They are not pretty birds, but they are very intelligent and seem to have a kind of no-nonsense confidence that I like. They avoid danger, but they never appear to be afraid. It looks like I can still see something of their dinosaur nature.

@jyrgenn@mas.to Here we have Corvus brachyrhynchos all over the place. I’ve taken to feeding them unshelled peanuts on my daily dog walk, and now there’s a sub-murder that taxes me regularly. They set up little toll stations along my walk to maximize their haul. But they get in lots of territorial fights with blue jays, mocking birds, and our red tail hawks. It’s a weird reverse pecking order where the smallest birds usually win, a kind of chihuahua effect.
