What if we made it a law that like services must interoperate without interop fees to the consumer? Like all payment systems must connect, it&#39;s up to them how they do it, but they must. Same with voice calling systems. The penalty for non-compliance being a revenue tax on proprietary services (that don&#39;t interop). The goal would be to discourage Walled Gardens, and raise revenue to fund protocol research and proof of concept projects. What might be some of the unintended consequences?

What got me thinking about interop laws is trying to decide which words to use for mobile/ cell network calling. While I was chewing on that, it occurred to me that it's all VoIP now, as are all remaining landlines. As are all voice calling apps/ platforms. So... why isn't there a universal VoIP standard that would allow any voice calling device or app to call any other, using a universal addressing system? Like there is with the international landline/ mobile network and phone numbers.

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz The UK has done that with respect to public #EV charging services, that they must roam. There are limits, but it is good. Mobile phone networks rather have it, and that's the model.

@strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz because here are no IT people who are competent enough to achieve this. It was done for the phone network, for the mobile network, so you can call someone regardless who their ISP is. But, when it comes to IT, the stupid, american idea of "standards de facto" will create a separate protocol per company.
