1/ When you on-board to Twitter, BlueSky, etc, you're asked a series of questions and the algorithm fills your feed with content and then you make decisions on who to follow. When you onboard to Mastodon, etc, your feed is essentially empty and you have start following as many people as possible to fill your feed. You then filter after the fact. I call this clean sheet on-boarding and I prefer it. However this is counter intuitive to the expectations of most people coming from other places.

2/ Most people that come from other social media are very, very guarded about whom they follow and with good reason. Convincing them to simply go on a following spree is like telling an abuse victim to trust people again. We need to find a way to make the on boarding process something less than a clean sheet process and but not as invasive as a Twitter algorithm. A smarter algorithm might actually be a solution.

  • @mike@thecanadian.social My experience was different (maybe it has changed?). What I got at first was everything in the public column, then I fine-tuned by following what interested me to get it into my 'Home' feed. I have just the two active columns. I block what doesn't interest me to make it easier to see what does. Overall, a much richer experience than 'X'. Seen almost no trolls. So thanks for that, Mike, and all the other administrators.

@mike@thecanadian.social I use that “clean sheet” as a sales pitch when I try to get others to come here: if you’re trying to escape being force fed algorithmic garbage, then knowing that there’s a direct link with everything you see in your feed to someone _you_ have interacted with, should be very alluring.
