You may have seen this story blowing up about Will Smith using AI to generate fake audiences to promote his latest tour, but the truth is more complicated. The audiences are real, but the footage was manipulated: first by Will Smith's team and then, without permission, by YouTube itself. https://waxy.org/2025/08/will-smiths-concert-crowds-were-real-but-ai-is-blurring-the-lines/

@andybaio huh i definitely fell for the bait and thought it was fully fake. i guess it’s easy to believe that Will Smith stopped having fans after the slap, but if other acts can still have fans after being convicted of actual crimes… guess it makes sense that will smith is still culturally relevant.

  • @andybaio Even looking at Instagram and YouTube videos side by side, I struggle to find anything wrong in the YouTube videos. I only see that the YouTube videos are sharper. How do people so easily notice those AI artifacts?

  • @andybaio I think exactly what many consider the ‘generative’ in ‘generative AI’ is- I request an image (or enhancement) in text form, and an image based AI ‘generates’ that image. Machine learning ‘enhancements’ that happen as a smartphone photo is taken have been a problem since the first person decided to take a photo of a scab or rash as a medical record and notice it had been ‘painted over’ Supposedly doing this upscale and clean ONLY on ‘shorts’, distributed meta/Instagram reels, tho.
