@going_to_maine @mav It's just surprising because anyone with the requisite technical knowledge to use less popular or niche browsers should also have enough foresight to check a browser's provenance. Who says "I'm leaving Chrome because Google is evil!" and then just doesn't even check who makes their next browser? It's like stepping on a rake, next to a big "WARNING: RAKE!" sign.

@zimzat @theorangetheme @going_to_maine @mav That explains why Crazy Micay continues to lie about people like me who asked basic questions a few years ago about notification compatibility in GOS by claiming that I participated in doxing campaigns against him (never heard of him until a week before I asked that), that I work for CopperheadOS (that was literally the first time I heard of them), and that I work for Techlore (yeah right, Henry is never there *smirk*).

@megatronicthronbanks @mav @zenbrowser is what I personally use, one of the few Firefox forks that does more than just tweak some settings but is actually trying to change how the UI works and adds really cool features like splitscreen, workspaces, etc can't live without it

@mav I use #VivaldiBrowser. It's from a nice team of people. But I still get some comments about it being chromium based. So here is the wishlist: made in Europe, with no tech from GAFAM and stripped from AI. Any suggestions?

@mav Things matter by what they are and not by who made it. Also if we are talking about who made it then you should be looking into git commits and not corporate structure... Just saying. I mostly like the people making the commits, literally the people making it. In the end if a crypto scammer homophobe makes it possible for a good piece of software to exist you using it (or not) doesn't change a bit. Same goes for a lot of things. Elon Musk is starlink's CEO, and yes, he's a literal piece of shit 90% of the time. Let that sink in. Starlink continues to be awesome and solved basic internet for millions for whom no one else solved it. So appart from belief systems: in rational thinking if we stop counting the good things and only count the bad things about everybody and then ban the whole of their spectrum from our lives: Are we better than them or are we getting a little bit like them? n_n

@mhkohne @mav I JUST found out about this. I now have a to-do to check out Vivaldi and DuckDuckGo, but Brave was recommended to me a few years ago and I didn't have the spoons to dig further. Now I know thanks to this thread so now I can fix it. 👍

@mav I think this is an unfortunate reality with tech choices but also beyond tech, rooted in a lack of training in critical thinking and a lack of consideration of the consequences of a choice. See also: * Everyone tells me that US tech spies on me, so let me install this supposedly secure messenger thing called Telegram * If I don't learn to use AI, I'm going to get left behind by this "innovation" and lose my job, so let me ask AI whether I should continue seeing my boyfriend, or how the tides will be tomorrow, and trust whatever it says. * I'm sick of Big Pharma over-prescribing unnecessary drugs just to make profits, so let me...not vaccinate my children because I'm sure it's a scam to sell autism treatments. * I'm sick of stagnant wages and politicians doing whatever they usually do, so let me vote for this guy who "tells it like it is".

@mav I can't imagine most people, even technical users, look at something like Brave with much scrutiny after seeing the founder & CEO is the ex-Mozilla co-founder & CEO and creator of JS. That's where my own interest ended, even. (To whit, Firefox and Zen Browser are neat alternatives for anyone now searching!)

The reason Brave is still a thing, albeit one with relatively low user numbers (less than Firefox), is that the crypto scam stuff is all opt in, not default - and it's one of the only browsers on both desktop & Android that tests on https://coveryourtracks.eff.org as having strong protection against trackers & ads, AND an actually randomized fingerprint - this latter part something that unfortunately none of the Firefox based browsers I'm aware of do. It also scores highly in the privacy audits tested at https://privacytests.org/ - and TrackerControl on Android confirms no known embedded tracker libraries in it as well (which is something that many other Chromium & Firefox based browsers fail at). That said - I agree with you, that Brave's CEO Brendan Eich's politics are not things I want to associate with, which is why I moved to Librewolf & Waterfox on desktop, and Cromite on Android, after being a Brave user for a number of years, in the time before I was made aware of Eich's donations to anti-gay marriage PAC's.

@mav I think its because when Brave released it had really good branding. Reminder that the average person doesn't use ad blockers, doesn't even understand the difference between ads and content, that's just "how the internet looks." To someone who believes the hype, Crypto is a cool futuristic alternative to corporate-owned banks, and Brave is an early adopter that embraced that futurism. Crypto may have crashed in 2022 but the average user hasn't noticed yet, might _never_ notice.
