@SecureOwl@infosec.exchange This screencap of a Facebook post is making the rounds, alleging that returning DEFCON attendees used a WiFi Pineapple to de-auth and spoof the in-flight Wi-Fi and harvest creds.

@Viss@mastodon.social LLMs are already basically compression. Discussion in videos from 3blue1brown: https://youtu.be/l6DKRf-fAAM https://youtu.be/GlYgs6v2YfU As far as shrinking the models themselves, Google is investing a lot in this space. They really want to sell you Android phones that can do at least some of the GenAI processing on the device itself, rather than shoveling everything up to a bunch of expensive datacenters. Gemma 4 has a bunch of tweaks that are beyond my understanding t...

@Viss@mastodon.social @jfslowik@infosec.exchange The cynical and unfortunately likely accurate answer here is that you probably can't convict an LLM of a crime because you can't establish intent for an entity that simply doesn't have any. And you probably can't convict an LLM's owners or operators unless they were dumb enough to include that intent in their prompt. At most it's probably a civil issue, and even then there are challenges because of a narrowing of damage...

All of Virginia is under a drought warning, and residents are being urged to conserve water. "The utility says the guidance only applies to non-essential residential usage, not businesses or industries." So I assume this means Virginia datacenters are free to continue to waste drinking water, got it. https://www.alxnow.com/2026/07/28/alexandrias-drinking-water-utility-calls-for-voluntary-water-conservation-amid-drought/

It's absolutely wild to me that our society's choices seem to be one of the following, depending almost entirely on which stakeholders offer the best bribes to the President of the United States and his family: 1) US Government-enforced AI moat, forcing all of us to use one of a handful of regime-approved GenAI models hosted behind rent-seeking American hosting companies ruining our environment, while immiserating most of the world's population. 2) Collapse of America's scam-ba...

TIL: The town of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania bought a dead body purely for marketing reasons. The town paid his widow a bunch of money for his remains and the right to rename their town after him to boost tourism. Jim Thorpe never set foot in Jim Thorpe, PA, and had no connections to the town while alive. But his body is there. For marketing reasons.

@Viss@mastodon.social @scottwilson@infosec.exchange Looks like Google added a backup/export feature to their Authenticator app sometime around 2020. That feature would've been nice to have pre-2020 when I switched phones and had to spend hours deprovisioning and reprovisioning 2FA on all my accounts. Not that I'm still bitter or anything.

@Viss@mastodon.social @scottwilson@infosec.exchange Just make darned sure that whatever 2FA they use has a backup. Some TOTP apps are better than others at this, but they all need to be paired with some sort of online cloud backup, and the key for that needs to be secured somewhere they can find it. Some TOTP apps will randomly fuck you over. Same with passkeys. If they're going to be stored on yubikeys then you're gonna wanna make sure they have all their accounts provisioned on at l...

The venality of the GenAI firms is breathtaking to behold. They insist that their widespread theft of intellectual property to train their models should be treated as transformative fair use, but that model distillation attacks by overseas competitors are somehow crossing a line. And their proposed solution to this made-up problem is lobbying the Trump regime for Juche-inspired isolationism. Which, you know, has been working out swell for North Koreans. All of this while their models churn o...

One of the most frustrating discoveries over the last couple years is how much of our critical small tech and open source technologies are apparently run by breathtakingly amoral or outright fascist leaders. Between Mullvad, Brave, Firefox, Kagi, and Proton, it's hard to find alternatives to big tech that we can trust to keep us safe against rising mass surveillance and authoritarianism. I'm certain these projects are staffed by exceptionally talented and earnest individuals working in...

Gas prices are high. Our economy is suffering from stagflation. We've threatened and alienated all our allies. Our military is losing a half-assed war with Iran, occupying American cities, accomplishing almost nothing against the still-in-power Chavistas in Venezuela, committing war crimes on the high seas, and obsessing over the testosterone levels of whatever straight white male remnant is allowed to continue to serve. The White House hasn't experienced this much destruction since the...

Is there any sort of standard/recommended way to hook up a small solar panel to a 12V car battery? My car is new enough that the 12V DC cigarette lighter plug is automatically disabled a few minutes after the car is turned off. I don't always drive it enough to keep it topped off, and I feel like a solar panel left on the dash would be a good option if it is easy to wire. Most of the consumer panels seem to either use a cigarette lighter (which I think won't work for my situation) or ass...
