@lily@problematisch.jetzt good question. I boosted it since IDK. - I guess if you want it changed/amended/replaced then you kinda would've to hand it over (similar to changing names on IDs means that xou'd reapply for new IDs and turn in old ones.

@lily@problematisch.jetzt No idea about legal requirements, but in my case I didn't need one for the registration (I also only send them a letter for it) and I didn't even need it for the change itself, since I went to the Standesamt where I was born (they initially told me I needed one, but that was a mistake and they were nice and gave me the new birth certificate for free since I already payed for the old one, that I didn't needed).

@lily@problematisch.jetzt legally, not really. practically, depends if you want to pick a fight or not. cologne accepted the sign up by email, so there is no legal requirement for this anywhere.

@lily@problematisch.jetzt Many registry offices allow you to do the preregistration online or on the phone (Leipzig allows both). I did it in Leipzig via their online form and didn't need any identification for that iirc. And I don't think there would be a legal basis to ask for the birth certificate in particular.
