@regehr Most of what you wrote is spot on, views that I've held and raised to no effect for a long time. I think you underestimate the deskilling of yourself in the 'healthy' way you described towards the end. For example, only asking #LLMs to do something you could do yourself means you don't refresh that ability, and miss opportunities to learn how to improve on how you did it last time.

@regehr I think regular completion is not directly detrimental, but when the machine supplies something you don't understand because you didn't make it or study it, then you're losing important 'muscle'. In the end I do not think that use is justified. I won't use #LLMs for the reasons of dependence and sovereignty you mention, nor for the many wider downsides which you don't mention. #LLMs are worse than asbestos and we should not be using them for code, or much else IMO.
