Sent in my contribution to &#39;Creative Commons International: A Collected Memoir&#39;. This brought back lots of memories and made me reflect on my thoughts then &amp; now. The image of a sheep on the new @creativecommons merchandise might be a bit too close to home 😉 If you are a (former) #CC advocate or have been contributing towards CC in someway, how do you look back at 25yrs of Creative Commons now? In hindsight some of our (or at least my) ideas on fairer copyright seem quite naive. The concepts & laws upon Creative Commons licenses are built, are willfully ignored by multinational conglomerates (a.k.a big tech) in the pursuit of profit and power. The ongoing sharecropping and pillaging of creativity to train AI has a tremendous impact on our society. Protection of creators and upholding our social contracts (attribution anyone?) have been lackluster at best.

In short: when all (creative) work can be expropriated from their creators, it does not bode well for the future of Creative Commons and the Free / Open Culture movement. Nonetheless, the first time my kids came home with some CC-licensed educational sheets I was so proud. Seeing Dutch educational material being shared freely under a Creative Commons license made me realize the positive impact we all can have. I try to hold on to this, even though it seems quite naive and rather quaint now.
