@Hyperlynx It might help if you get specific about what parts hurt. The trying out sleeping on the floor is a good suggestion too, because it might give you additional information. You could put down some blankets for padding and it would still be very firm. Seconding working with an OT. They are problem solvers.

    @vervain in my case it's not pain, just discomfort. I suspect I need a much softer mattress than most people, because every one I've tried has been too firm. Recently I'd been trying with a mattress topper which was kind of okay but not great (ie, I could sleep but not fantastically). I bought a $40 foam one at kmart on a whim and tried adding that as well; it felt lovely and plush, but then I felt even worse the next day. I don't know what that means. So last night I tried no topper at all, and it was a disaster. I don't know what that means either. I've tried just plain on the floor as well, since I've managed that once or twice at game jams. It didn't work, without the sleep deprivation of a game jam...
