I'm hosting @Mastodon@mastodon.social's first ever Discovery Week in just a few days. It's a chance for the public to weigh in on the future of online communities. We'll be discussing topics like user-controlled algorithms, trust & safety, creator tools, and more. Your input will help steer Mastodon towards a more inclusive and impactful roadmap. Non-technical folks strongly encouraged to attend, and there's an async option if you can't make the live sessions! https://app.hi.events/event/7599/mastodon-discovery-week-2026 #mastodon

@imanijoy Really love seeing this initiative! Not sure I'll be able to attend, so definitely appreciate the async option. @Mastodon

@imanijoy @Mastodon This is a great idea! And thanks for providing the option for asynchronous participation - as an Australian I appreciate this :)

@imanijoy @Mastodon this is rather interesting, I hope the best path is found. I have been really disheartened by the disabling of the timelines which happened earlier this year. It sort of feels like the openness is gone, even though those timelines mostly had things that no person should ever see. So, the reason for eliminating them is clear. How can this new selection process be used to steer the software back towards openness and choice?

@imanijoy @Mastodon Every time I see these posts talking about "Mastodon" as though it's a unitary thing that can be steered, I get confused. Is this about the back end (for example, whether algorithms other than chronological order will be available as standard on the server/instance side) or about the front end (for example, a specific app that someone who has an account on a server uses to read, write, and interact with posts)? Or both? And if an app is involved, which one? The last time I saw a bunch of stuff about "Mastodon" framed this way, it turned out to be an app-specific thing that made peoples' content warnings bad, but that didn't affect me because I don't use that app. But this sounds like it includes back end stuff that might affect me? So confused....

  • @imanijoy @Mastodon I am interested in opt-in, user-controlled algorithms. Allow me to cherry-pick a few good ideas from the baddies.

@imanijoy I'm not totally sure what this entails, but I signed up. A good way to include non-technical people is to avoid using technical linguo, though... (a plague a lot of technical people suffer from) "Async"? I can guess what it means, but I'm not totally sure. Does it mean "on demand" in plain English?

@imanijoy @Mastodon can we get proper dual stack support from Mastodon software and mastodon.social please! Currently this is leading to a great fragmentation of the Fediverse. Maybe also a test instance for admins to debug and validate?
