Innocent question. I promise I’m not sealioning. Bandcamp. We’re cool with it? It’s fair to musicians? I should get the app and just leave the music there without downloading it? #bandcamp #streaming #music

@CheapPontoon I use it and publish music there with reservations. They laid off staff who organized, for example. I’d definitely recommend downloading and saving files to a device you control.

  • @CheapPontoon I'd follow the guidance of the union: https://www.bandcampunited.org/ Otherwise, I'm as poor as a church mouse, so if I like something I just rip it using yt-dlp or NewPipe. Sorry.

@CheapPontoon Bandcamp good. I recommend downloading everything you buy bc you can and do own it, and what a privilege that is these days. But i have over 1000 albums owned and i have not followed my own advice to back them up anywhere. 😬 I've been using it since 2011 and have no complaints. I guess maybe playlists are more onerous than like spotify? But i never used spotify before so this is not a thing i ever got used to or expected from a music app.

@CheapPontoon One of the albums I had bought vanished after the record label it was hosted on disappeared. The album only recently resurfaced under the artist's name. I'm glad I had downloaded it. Always download

@CheapPontoon Hello - musician with about 12 project on bandcamp, going back to 2009 here. IMO, it cannot be trusted. Like so many of the brands we knew & loved, bandcamp has been slurped up by venture capitalists. The majority of the original core team was let go. I cancelled my pro subscription the last time the company was sold. However, with all that said, it is still a platform that is (IMO) fair to artists - at least for now. They have recently begun cutting over their payment system to Stripe, which doesn't bode well. As others have said, download your purchased albums, just in case.

@CheapPontoon No, their app is horrible, just like all apps that could just be web pages. Use their web site and download. Use the app to stream, but definitely download. @sb
