@Undercat asked my queer friend who lives in Victoria, he says:

He also says that the only time he's encountered overt homophobia is in Vancouver. He'd probably also try to stay out of the boonies; Nanaimo is "boonie-adjacent" apparently.

@smn Thank you for this. I do wonder how “boonies” in that context compares to where we currently live in Alaska in terms of severe right-wing intolerance. I suspect it would be mild by comparison but I’m in no position to really know.
