Seeing so many beautiful paintings and sculptures in person was a powerful experience, and I think I have figured out (partly) why. I was standing there, pondering an object, an artifact, that was also pondered (intensely!) by van Gogh, or Rodan, or Picasso. Created for the express purpose of exactly this. We are both united in that moment, across space and time, in our mutual focus on this artifact that cost the artist days, weeks, sometimes years to produce.

The artifact is evidence of their work, yes, but it also joins us together, evidence of our shared humanity as we are both looking in the same direction for a time, drawn toward something that has enchanted us both. And I think this is a sharpened reason why AI "art" is not art. It is that skip from ideation to end product that literally leaves the art out of the picture. 3/
