My ideas about retirement are heavily colored by two family deaths: First my aunt died in 2006. She was 67 and her biggest regret was that she worked too much and then didn't get to enjoy retirement. Then my mom died in 2009. She was even younger, only 61, and her biggest regret was also that she worked too much and then didn't get to enjoy retirement. It's certainly made me think about priorities.

My dad is 80 years old now, and he never saved enough to retire on, so he still works about 30 hours a week. But, he loves his work. He teaches young adults with autism at a skill building vocational support center, and it fills him with purpose. He wouldn't retire even if he could afford it.

@tilton I know someone who's trying to retire in his forties. And he's on track to do it, which, good for him. But he's made a lot of personal sacrifices to work to do it. I occasionally remind him this is only a good plan if you live long enough to enjoy it, and unfortunately none of us can take that for granted.
