@Paul Where is the stream in relation to your plot?
If the stream runs close to the top of your plot it makes sense to fill the top butt from the stream and through the hosepipe to use gravity to take the water down hill to fill other butts along the way.
Burying the butt would prevent it being blown about by the wind when it’s empty.

@Broadfork I think the wind thing is probably right. The stream is at the bottom so not a gravity thing - it might just be so it's easier to reach in to fish out detritus and/or fill up a watering can for the top of the plot.
