I joined the Fediverse a year ago today, deactivating the bird a couple weeks later, and my relationship with social media has improved significantly over that time. I checked in on the other space several times before allowing my accounts to be permanently deleted earlier this year, and it felt like a fever dream. I wish more people realized that social media (er, networking) doesn&#39;t have to be that way. Bluesky, Threads, etc still miss the boat.

@paulknightly@mstdn.social In my opinion, Mastodon is so much better than Twitter or X or whatever it’s called this week in so many ways! Not to mention the freedom that third-party apps now have to provide their users with the most accessible experience possible. Hence why I love Mona now. #Accessibility #Mona, #Mastodon#Fediverse

@paulknightly@mstdn.social I've had a similar experience. My state of mind improved significantly after ditching Facebook and Twitter. My screen time has fallen drastically. I still browse the fediverse daily, but much less than I used to doomscroll the other two. The fediverse (at least in my bubble) has been devoid of drama and state sponsored bots pushing all kinds of nasty rhetoric. Looking back at the other platforms, they seem hostile and addictive.

@paulknightly@mstdn.social I signed up for Bluesky because so many people I knew insisted on going there (still baffled by that, it's like a beta version). I grudgingly started using it somewhat when Dorsey deleted his account. Now people are moving to Threads, owned by Facebook. Holy fuck, sorry peeps but I will not follow everyone there.

@paulknightly@mstdn.social people use social media in different ways. Some want a conversation, some want TV News they can yell back at, others want a celebrity tracker. Mastodon seems to me to be the best at the first of those. Threads at the second. And blusky the third.

@paulknightly@mstdn.social I’m still doing both on and off, but Mastodon is way better for my mental health. I started using Twitter for exposure to voices I wouldn’t normally hear - primarily Indigenous people. Then I started using it as well to find out about major events in the moment. I’m still going back for those things but would rather do it here if I can figure it out.
