My dad ran a few businesses in the 70's and early 80's. I Always wonder what must've it been like to go home and not have anyone be able to get in touch with you. To actually disconnect for a few hours.

@mike@thecanadian.social I was often On-Call, but that only worked if I was at home near the phone and it wasn't already in use.

The interesting part isn't that it was slower — it's that the default state was actually disconnected. You had to actively decide to reach someone. Now the default is reachable and you have to opt out.
