@deadDuck @ianbetteridge No, I think that's basically it. Conspiracy theories appeal to people because it provides a community that tells them their feelings of weakness are actually power.
In many ways, it is a cult. Except that obedient devotion to the leader does not seem to be a regular thing.

@yora I love the perspective in the book How Minds Change by David McRaney. From the experience of the person who left the flat earth cult, it seems like sometimes "no leader" can be just as domineering because the cult-ural norms are enforced by the true believers as they signal their virtue. Anyway, thank you for sharing.
