"It’s insanely hard to make a full-time income as a creator." Interesting thoughts from Ali Abdaal: "If you just vlog your life like Emma Chamberlain, you'll have no competitive advantage (unless you’re extremely charismatic; even then it’s tricky)." Curious about what folks here on Mastodon think. #creator #youtube

  • @mijustin It's really hard to be lots of things. I'm glad he is setting part of the record straight that it's a business you have to work hard at to succeed, and it may take years to actually make it your fulltime income. But, I started writing about coding in 2008 and those coding posts brought me connections that then got me contracts that earn me 6 figure/year...for years. So, FT creator...hard. As marketing for your business...really good.

@mijustin It's funny to see discussions like this... My husband is a theatre nerd turned highschool drama teacher. Way back before Youtube & social media, it was *understood* that earning a living from art, was an extreme long shot. Like winning the lottery. He became a teacher in order to have a career still adjacent to art. 'Content Creator' is a just modern evolution of artist. Yet today there is much more competition. It's not rare anymore to be an online artist. 1/2

@mijustin This is an interesting problem to discuss. I've been making videos online since the first year Youtube existed, mostly vlogs because I didn't have time or friends to film anything more interesting. For the last ten years, I've been doing my content topless, "to normalize the sight of female nipples outside of explicitly sexual situations," then I talk about normal vlog stuff (personal stories, mental health, destruction of women's bodily autonomy, etc) just topless.
