I’m almost 46 years old. Today my 17 year old kid taught me that pirates wore an eye patch to have an eye always at the ready to see well below deck, not because they were missing an eye. Uh.

@sol@typo.social There does not appear to be any historical record of this practice; it was popularized by testing the viability of the technique on Mythbusters (apparently it does kinda work) but I've not been able to figure out where the claim came from in the first place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyepatch#Association_with_pirates
