Why do companies play music while one waits on a call? Most of the time it sounds incredibly compressed and distorted. It plays havoc with my so so hearing.

@ojala Yes, this is something I despise as well. They need a menu option: "press 9 to be subjected to excruciatingly poor audio that might have been music at some point in its tormented existence."

Line quality is now good enough that being on a muted line is indistinguishable from being hung up on. The glorious days of in band signaling and analogue line noise are now gone. So they play some over compressed garbage. Over compressed because speech is within certain frequency bands and phone is optimised for that. Which means all the instruments sound like garbage as they’re almost filtered out. @ojala
