@colorblindcowboy Don't go in expecting something serious and dark. When I first saw it in the theater, I didn't like it much because I wasn't expecting the comedy. But rewatches over the last 25+ years have raised it a ton in my esteem.
There is a lot of cheese, but it is so earnest and well earned. And the antagonist is great - formidable and scary, but also sympathetic in ways.

@fskornia Did you ever see “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow”? I’m pretty sure it was a bomb and critically panned because it’s an unapologetic love letter to classic adventure/sci-fi. I thought it was perfect because it knew exactly what it wanted to be, an old-school adventure. And it was very earnest too, in ways it was over the top. What you said made me think of it.
