@kyonshi i'd pick debian just so you don't have to deal with snaps. edit: apparently the version of Ubuntu that ships with Linux Mint doesn't have the snapstore! but I'd stick with Debian regardless.

@kyonshi Mint develops LMDE as a backup for the case that Ubuntu does something that makes it impossible for Mint to continue using Ubuntu as a base,. So I guess, Mint is not much of an Ubuntu fan by themselves. 😄 Standard (Ubuntu) Linux Mint is still the recommended distribution, but LMDE seems not to be far behind. The last time I tried, it worked pretty well on my old PC. I think, you can give it a shot.

@kyonshi The main edition is based on Ubuntu but without the snapstore. There is also LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) which is direct based on Debian. Both use the Cinnamon desktop. I find both very usable for daily use. I run LMDE on an old Lenovo laptop which is more than 10 years old.

@kyonshi I am going to add my voice to LMDE as well. Unless she needs to run something that is the absolute latest version of an application due to a new feature it has, LMDE is the better choice. Debian can be slow moving to the latest version of applications, and LMDE inherits this due to its Debian base. It does get all the security updates, just slow on moving to new versions of applications with added/updated features.

The Debian variant is generally considered comparable to the base version. Idk I use Debian and its a fine OS, but LMDE will probably be a little more user friendly than stock Debian.

@kyonshi Debian has a lot of outdated packages so if you want to be bleeding edge or have the lastest i would go with mint, but otherwise Debian is pretty stable and is hard to break

@kyonshi given the AI shenanigans Ubuntu is up to, I would bet on LMDE to be the better choice. For me it is anyway. 😅

@kyonshi Ubuntu has announced they're putting AI in the OS, so there's that. There was a point where I respected Ubuntu (when they started contributing fixes back to Debian), but I've lost a lot of that respect for them over the years.

@kyonshi I put Debian on my wife's laptop simply because it's what I have on my own laptop and that makes it easier for me to administer and answer questions.
