my personal stance is: helmets offer protection against impact to the headhats cover the top of the head but offer no such impact protection. by this definition, a helmet is not a hatvisors, tiaras, burger king crowns, and the like are not hats because they do not cover the top of the head

@typhlosion@denden.world I personally believe the "everything is a sandwich" principle applies here, but in this case for hats when anything is placed upon head

@typhlosion@denden.world A hat is headwear used for fashion and utility (keeping rain and sun out your face), a helmet is headwear used for safety and protection

@typhlosion@denden.world I say they are different Hats usually simply sit atop the head A helmet is generally positively affixed in some fashion, usually via a chin strap A hat usually covers just the top of the head, while a helmet generally covers at least the back of the head, and often the sides and face as well A hat's purpose is fashion and protection from weather, while a helmet's purpose is protection from impact, projectiles or other physical threats
