After failing with the minimal installer (in the exact same way), it occurred to me that I was selecting proprietary drivers at the bootloader before beginning. So, now I'm trying it with the open source drivers. At least the screen resolution for the installer is more appropriate.
I forgot to bypass the reboot and tell it to power off. I'm not sure why Manjaro doesn't prompt to remove the install media after finishing. Everyone else does. Anyway. Machine is shut down and media removed. Either we'll get a boot in a few minutes or I still won't have a bootable Manjaro. :blobcatgiggle:

It hadn't booted after I finished lunch and a live toot. I'm kind of mystified why Manjaro would boot successfully to ISO but not to the finished install. The default install shows the splash screen instead of the detailed boot information so I have 0 idea what it's hung up on. I'm going to try a third time but try to edit the grub file while it's still on the ISO so I can get a detailed view and hopefully see what it's getting stuck on.
