@ClarusPlusPlus would it be an option to see if your old employer has any work you could do as a freelancer?
Idk if it would be awkward, but I did the same thing when I left my steady job and turned self-employed. They're still a client of mine now, 15 years later!

@Tijn yeah, I did email my old boss to ask if there was any work two months ago. I got a "great to hear from you; will keep you in mind" that felt very much like a brush-off or a soft no. But I think I might write a follow up on the assumption that it was genuine, and check in with him.
