@sos As a former gamergirl I didn't even exist in the concept of game developer. Until #GamerGate happened... And now I do exist in Silent Hill the message and as the Joker of what ever I can't remember the title of Game... Well at least women now do exist in video games... Or in tv shows like Netflix there are women as game developer I do exist there too. Awesome, right?

@sos I've been following the game industry for years now. They are probably the single most toxic industry anywhere in western civilization. They usually presage negative changes to worker-boss relationships and production of new products that later become mirrored by other industries. I look at my collection and think it took an enormous amount of creative effort from thousands of people to make these things, but it only takes a handful of bad managers to really foul it up.

@sos last year was bad for layoffs, this year is already looking to be worse: https://lunasorcery.github.io/vg-layoffs/ So much of this is about companies that bet big on infinite capitalist growth after seeing numbers spike at the beginning of COVID, with zero plan for when things tapered off. And the employees pay for it. I hate it here.

@sos I really wish more people understood that companies will never, ever love them.

@sos Often, the crunch is only happening as the result of a deadline management set for when they’ll be laying off the people working to get something out the door. It’s not a coincidence when a game ships and the next week, hundreds of the people who worked on it are out of the job. Those things were planned months in advance to coincide, but management only decided to mention one of those dates to their employees, to maximize output.

@sos Ascendant made big promises about time off and bonuses in meetings, but because none of it was in writing they back peddled as soon as it came time to pay up. Engineers received up to 5 extra days depending on what their managers argued for them, some received 0.

@sos there’s a saying that I really like: “20 years from now, the only people who will remember that you worked late are your kids”

@sos that's pretty much my health recipe for staying in games the last 20 years: I only do OT on my own terms
