the only unifying bit i can find about research is that everybody seems to think that there's some other (wicked) place that "only cares about papers" but it's of course never the place where they are, where they are is of course different.

i used to think another unifier was that everybody in research, regardless of the type of institution, would say "everybody gets along here, i feel we're really collegial" unlike some nefarious Other place that was all assholes, but then i finally did discover a couple places where the assholes were common and prominent enough that they couldn't even play that card with a straight face
