i used to think another unifier was that everybody in research, regardless of the type of institution, would say "everybody gets along here, i feel we're really collegial" unlike some nefarious Other place that was all assholes, but then i finally did discover a couple places where the assholes were common and prominent enough that they couldn't even play that card with a straight face

every place that does research is also (they think uniquely): * siloed * having trouble making an impact it is periodically suggested that somebody should Build The Website that will solve those problems and "let people know what we are up to" this is usually done on top of the strata of the previous websites that all claimed to be doing the same thing but failed by immediately going stale and/or not being pitched to the right people
