@Andii @pluralistic You can also orient fixed placement solar panels so that you're not optimizing for overall generation throughout the day, but for creating power early and late in the day. There's no reason you couldn't overbuild capacity such that you'd have a surplus of electricity for a much longer span of time throughout the day. Tie that in with grid storage systems of various types and you've got a recipe for an overall system with very little need for oil and gas-based generation.

@Andii @pluralistic The German minister for economy recently used this as avreason to lower renewable subsidies. The german grid can't handle all this excess power and so we should stop building renewables. Instead we should build new gas power plants to cover times of low solar. No surprise, she used to work as a gas lobbyist before her office.
