Seeing max7219 chips are like 20 bucks a piece now, I thought I'd try one of the 50 cent Chinese clones. There's tons of crappy dot matrix stuff being driven by them, so they must mostly work, I thought.

@tristan it's actually just a bit of translation fuckery. The OFFICIAL handling sheets for these parts when not ordered as vacuum sealed or when they're exposed to any non-humidity controlled area recommends pretty much the exact same to remove moisture prior to installation. It's common across pretty much every part and package there is.
