@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Stop using PayPal. Thiel is a fascist.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange In Australia - not seeing any such options under Data and Privacy. The Permissions You've Given section just lists using Google to show last four characters of credit cards and something about making it easier to check out quickly. Neither seems to be something you can turn off.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Alternative solution: ✅ delete your account I did it some time ago, you can do it, too. Don't feed the beast.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Just FYI: At least for me here in Canada, the "Personalized Shopping" category doesn't seem to exist at this time.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange doesn't appear to be a thing everywhere (yet). Australian account-holder here - no trace of such an option.

@zog@jauntygoat.net 2025-01-28 08:08
@threatresearch@infosec.exchange for those of us located in Australia we don't see the ""Personalized Shopping" option.. perhaps fortunately..

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Thank you for mentioning this. They should not have switched this on by default!

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange I don't seem to have this there. (But I disabled personalized ads or recommendations or what it was.) Is there some incremental rollout, is it limited to some countries, etc.?

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange YIKES! Which alternatives to paypal do we have besides #stripe ? Does stripe do similar crap?
-
@Orca@nya.one 2025-01-28 11:22
@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Paypal forces user to set a phone/email authentication method as "backup 2FA method in case the first 2FA method is lost", essentially reduces one's Paypal account security to phone verification code, which is a bummer.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange no Personalised Shopping entry here in the EU?
-
@bernardlyons@mastodon.ie 2025-01-28 11:43
@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Is this US, EU, rest of world or all of the above? Please specify when posting, it reduces worry a little for the global audience in the fediverse.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Also, consider simply deleting your account. Is the sharing of your information worth the slight convenience? Not for me...

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange What are they changing since the last time they changed something and I turned it off then, I don't even remember when it was I've had it off so long.

@angelfeast@blorbo.social 2025-01-28 17:05
@threatresearch@infosec.exchange It's also possible to update this through the mobile app - profile, data and privacy, personalized shopping, turn off.

@threatresearch@infosec.exchange Years ago, I used PayPal when I set up a web site to accept direct orders (for a "boutique" retrocomputing product). PayPal offered a crappy user experience, but it worked. When I decided that I didn't want anything to do with Musk (or Thiel), even though long gone from PayPal, I switched to Square.
