An hour in and I've still not gotten past the loading screen. I checked some of my other machines and they still run so there's something else going on there. I can't waste so much hard drive space for a non-working VM so I blew it away.
It's pretty likely there was a corruption of the ISO or something.
I might try something like a base install at some point but that's enough for one day.

After failing with the minimal installer (in the exact same way), it occurred to me that I was selecting proprietary drivers at the bootloader before beginning. So, now I'm trying it with the open source drivers. At least the screen resolution for the installer is more appropriate. I forgot to bypass the reboot and tell it to power off. I'm not sure why Manjaro doesn't prompt to remove the install media after finishing. Everyone else does. Anyway. Machine is shut down and media removed. Either we'll get a boot in a few minutes or I still won't have a bootable Manjaro. :blobcatgiggle:
