@zachleat @khalidabuhakmeh Good piece. I have very similar thoughts and feelings. . This is a management failure, management should not just push AI usage forward for the shake of AI usage but should also (together with the team) create strategies about what we want AI to do and what we don't want AI to do. Just because AI _can_ do something does not mean we want to delegate it to it. We have to discuss what we want our jobs to be. "You make meaning through the doing." 💯

@zachleat If people claiming that because they decided AI is 'unethical' -> they will not use it -> they are now ethical actually worked, we'd all be walking around in white robes and whacking one out in the street. Depression-quitting because your colleagues are idiots is not a new, AI thing. It's just how we manage to stay sane and eat at roughly the same time.

@zachleat this shit brings out the worst of cognitive biases where the one time it worked makes up for the fallout of the 20 times it didn't. the mere potential to get something done faster seems to justify whatever cost. and besides the other 200 times we used an AI tool nothing very bad happened immediately after! so it was probably a positive! /s

@zachleat I think this has always been an industry that is difficult to navigate if you care about building high quality things that are not doing evil. Arbitrary deadlines with pressure to ignore security and correctness, dark patterns, selling out user privacy. The companies that pretended to care about this stuff usually actually didn’t and just needed the mask to attract talented engineers. (1/2)

@zachleat after dot bomb, much of the work was either combat pay (high pay due to high pain) or yet more folks just hoping to do the minimum to get more VC funding so they could IPO and bail before anyone figured out it was all vaporware. everyone i knew had been laid off at least once. at the time, i was lucky enough to have a little money put aside and i did what i call my mid-life shiny red car change in my life. got out of tech completely, moved away from the bay area, starting biking, doing yoga/pilates, teaching mandolin & guitar. wound up getting certified and taught pilates as well as music. enough sanity returning to tech, along with a divorce to pay off and i got back into tech in 2009. i see the same kind of toxic level stress in the field now i saw then. folks burned out. folks seeing no good projects or only evil projects hiring. VC money pouring gasoline on all the fires. for the second time in my life, doing the math to see if financially i can just get out of the field completely and do something that doesn't feel like it's sucking every bit of joy and wonder out of me. teaching music and pilates was very satisfying. i was helping other folks make their lives better and more joyful. not sure what it will be this time but knowing i'm making things better rather than worse must be a part of it.

@zachleat I've been thinking the same thing lately. I'm wondering if my current career has hit the wall, and it's time for a new one. This was my third career, so I would actually enjoy doing and learning a job I've never done before. But with the USA about to tank the global economy, maybe I should not risk a new job? (As old as I am, you'd think I wouldn't have to worry about that. But I do.)

@zachleat This is unfortunately very relatable. When I quit, I suspect I will not return to tech as a carrier but I hope to keep it as a hobby. I'll need to find something else.
