At that point @mray reached out and said "hey this tutorial is good but it really needs better artwork" and just handed me the INCREDIBLE vector graphics art that went into the AP tutorial immediately and really made it sing
At that point, a bunch of oldschool w3c standards people started suggesting we remove the tutorial from the top of the document and move it into its own "primer" doc. I strongly felt that would be a mistake and insisted we keep it, which I think was right

Ultimately, one of the things I think that's made ActivityPub successful *was* having a tutorial with a very human story at the top of the document. This makes what might seem like a dry and intimidating document feel understandable and accessible I think. I've done this with several specifications since! In many ways I think aside from the necessary but slow parts of carrying the spec through the process, this was my best contribution to ActivityPub. But everyone listed in that doc did a lot!
