i think we need to recognize the literacy crisis as extending well beyond just literal reading-and-writing literacy and consider broader literacy in modern technology. i know so many young adults who are completely unaware of how to use computers in even basic ways

this is not to say that they can't use computers at all -- they absolutely can and do! sometimes quite proficiently! but its also very curated narrow knowledge, rather than general computer competency, and the gaps in their knowledge about things that are pretty basic is stunning
