this is not to say that they can't use computers at all -- they absolutely can and do! sometimes quite proficiently! but its also very curated narrow knowledge, rather than general computer competency, and the gaps in their knowledge about things that are pretty basic is stunning

i don't think this is their fault, quite the contrary. over the last, i dunno.. 20 years or so? we've sort of pawned off teaching new things onto the nebulous innate literacy people are wrongly proclaimed to have (e.g. """digital natives""") while destroying schools
