@tsturm yeah, just thought I could edit the program binary so that it's in the 'running state' so I'm limited to a single line of basic as the USR command.
More curious really about what in the system variables determines if the program is being run, or just edited. 🤔

@Hundstrasse On the Spectrum, the file header has the number of the next BASIC line to execute, that might be the same for the ZX81.
