@gael Google was out there since like forever, Facebook literally created the modern concept of social media. Microsoft has done a shit ton for tech as a whole. I'm not saying they're necessarily good, but these companies certainly created a new world, the one we know today.

@gael One of those I've never used. The other two I've not touched for 15 and 5 years respectively. LOL #ProperComputing

@gael according to Stephen Hawking singularities will evaporate eventually ⚫️

@gael "An historical singularity that won't last. Oh, you sweet summer child. Like the British East India Company, one day Microsoft and Google will be gone, but if you think the internet of the early '90s is ever coming back, I've got a bridge to sell you. 7 98

@gael So what can we DO about it????, my local linux user group in Devon is DEAD, on here we are all just talking to each other as in the converted, we need to bring in the masses from out side these circles, which I have no idea HOW to do that on my own. Any event such as Software/Hardware/Document freedom day or similar NEEDS a few people to attend and run so it does not look like a one person band trying to do the event. I am at a total loss how to keep going with this, but I fully understand the concerns, but trying to tell others that is like talking to a brick wall, gets nowhere. Most people use big tech and are not going to just give that up, despite all the noise about privacy, spying, tracking etc etc. Unless those doing BASIC computer courses are told they have choices say MS office vs LibreOffice people will go with what they are aware of, and shun alternatives as they feel there is a catch.

@gael We had AOL until we realized we just need the internet, not a shell that is limited by a corporate overload.

@gael Like it or not, the reason personal computers even exist and are affordable to every day people is because of Microsoft. Are they a shitty megacorp? Yes. But you literally would not have a PC if it weren't for them.

@gael We had a life before the whole internet showed up too-- and ya..it was great too!

@gael I personally did not have an internet life before Microsoft and when Google first appeared, it was great. At the time I first went online, I think the only alternative to Microsoft was Apple. But we sure don't need them NOW.

@gael I actually didn't have an Internet and Web life before Microsoft. First time I dialed up, I was running Windows 95. That was before Google and Facebook, though. Back then we had AltaVista and forums. Also, I started using Linux soon after. I was young and nerdy, and 1990s Linux was all kinds of appealing to someone like me.
