@hazelnot open standards themselves are often a way to give the pretense of democratic governance without any of the attendant controls or accountability over the exercise of power. this is a problem we also find in the fediverse

It is easier in some ways, and harder in others to inspect those packets for surveillance than it is/was for snail mail, but I think you are exaggerating.
