Those headstones are for one year olds, two year olds, three year olds, four year olds, five her olds. Dozens and dozens in grave yards old enough, from before vaccines. Eight year old girls. Ten year old boys. Dead, dozens.

@kevinrns @greene That's not lost on me; and you aren't wrong about the evidence in these graveyards of the great improvements in medicine over child mortality. In this particular picture I counted 7 children with one date listed, so likely stillborn, out of nine total buried. That's what made me also think of the taboo that still exists around discussing stillbirth and miscarriage, and the changing culture around burial.
