The Matrix contingent of the "let's move the Olympia discord community to something else" had an experimentation session with Zulip today. Lots of neat ideas here. Threads are good and more things should have them. I wanted to like it. Two things kill it for me: - The mobile app is terrible. You get the low-density "avatar + username on one line, message below that, padding all around" style, and that's it. There are three different views of messages and two of them are variations of "smush all the messages from every channel into one list". I'm told the desktop app is better, and for chat within a company where everyone works from a computer that's probably fine, but for this sort of casual social community with a nontrivial portion of primarily-mobile users, it's going to be rough. - You can't reply to messages. It has *threads*, and actually a pretty good implementation of them, but you can either reply to a thread or send a disconnected message to a channel. If the thing you're replying to wasn't already a thread, there's no way to turn it into one. You can quote messages, which is the hack we used on old-school forums, but that just duplicates the whole message instead of linking them together (and further eats away my already rapidly shrinking vertical screen space). I would probably recommend this as a Slack replacement, but it's not a good Discord replacement, and I don't think I fully understood what really differentiated the two until now.
