The other major faction here is pushing for Fluxer, which is a much more 1:1 Discord replacement that I have not tried yet. Cool that it exists, I wish them the best of luck with it, but if that's the direction we go I will be recusing myself from helping with administration. I will not willingly take any responsibility for running explicitly beta software whose self hosting guide consists entirely of the word "TODO".

It exists and it works. The main objections to Matrix seem to be around grouping: Discord wants you to make a sprawling mass of channels to all be collectively run as one. The Matrix model is more that you have individual channels and you can group them into a space, but the channels are the primary Thing. This has implications for moderation, which I am somewhat ignoring because I passively moderate a few communities and they're all quiet enough that I can only remember one person I've banned across all of them and clearly my experience is universal, right? I will admit there's *some* merit to this for running a large community (though I wish Discord would let me leave individual channels). There's also a collection of local Signal chats I'm in, and the experience there is kind of trash due in part to how disconnected and undiscoverable they are. My preference for Matrix is as much "please do not make me install another chat app" as anything else, which is perhaps not a thing I should be actively imposing on other people.
