@violetmadder You’re the janitor. You have health care, you have an apartment, and a pension. When you arrive at the school the teachers and kids say “hello— !” because you have been there for a decade and they know and trust you. You spotted a leak in the basement once and probably saved the district thousands of dollars. You know where all the supplies are AND how to get sharpie off of glass. The school is safe and the kids can learn because of YOU and everyone knows it.

@violetmadder My job as a teacher is a little like this and I think that sense of community and doing meaningful work is what most people want. I sent an email to Mr. Jones* the other day since my glue sticks were being melted by the radiator— he fixed the room so that doesn’t happen anymore. I make the kids clean up because I refuse to let them make more work for him. He knows this. So who are these bastards who want to destroy every single job that works like ours?

@futurebird @violetmadder How many of us, seriously, know how to fix "wrong type of marker used on whiteboard" without searching the Internet for it and trying a bunch of options that don't work? That school janitor knows how to fix it, and where the bottle is kept in the storeroom.

@futurebird @violetmadder this fits with a cousin who retired from a high income position to be a school janitor He loved it, wished he'd retired years earlier Making a difference for the kids. Being a reliable resource to help the teachers so they could concentrate on teaching. Those were invaluable to him. It helped that he had a retirement to supplement pay as school staff and teachers don't get paid squat where he was working
