@abergmeier @Di4na I like the framing as an "expectation game", because it seems applicable on other levels too. For context: I get all kinds of people foaming angry when a school chooses BigTech (not a proponant myself) instead of FOSS alternatives. When asked if someone can deliver specific FOSS as SAAS with an SLA and a DPA. ... crickets. ...

@abergmeier @Di4na So a school expects hasslefree service without on-prem maintance regardless if its open or closed and somebody makes an offer to be procured. OSS communities dont want liability (which I get) but do expect schools to choose it. Or if there is empathy towards the public sector they expect goverment to fund schools properly for technical expertise to do everything themselves.

@joeldebruijn @abergmeier @Di4na but in all such cases: no-one says that "using FLOSS" equals "getting it directly from the authors". There are numerous companies that'll provide FLOSS with support, for a fee. From SUSE, via Aquia to a local software house. Hell, in the Netherlands we even have nonprofits doing exactly this, for schools (e.g. surf.nl).

@joeldebruijn @abergmeier @Di4na The expectation (from the point of view of the “supplier”) is right there in the software license indemnification and warranty waiver paragraph.

@joeldebruijn @abergmeier I am more than ready to offer "SASS with a SPA and a DPA" I even have a structure built for it for my stuff. But uh. All of this has a cost and so far no one wants to pay it. I wonder why... oh no, i know.
