That still makes no sense. I always assumed it was like...if the thing were to collapse, like a TV tower, the "guide line" would guide it to fall a specific (safe) way. That was when I thought it was guide and why they called it that.

@An0n But it's not supposed to guide it down, it's supposed to keep it up. "A guy-wire, guy-line, guy-rope, down guy, or stay, also called simply a guy..." (first line of wiki article). Stay makes more sense, but then I can't get a gender joke out of it, just a petplay joke.
